Ladies – This post is dedicated to the men in our lives. April is National Minority Health Month and this year’s theme is Man Up For Your Health. And they couldn’t have found a better spokesman than Jeff Johnson. Not sure what it is about our men, but they won’t go to the hospital unless [...]

As the name blackgirlgrown suggests, this website is dedicated to “being grown” and dealing with “grown up” issues affecting our families, careers, community, and finances. But “being grown” for one person can be very different from another’s definition. Over the weekend I went on a “being grown” Twitter rant and came up with the [...]

On World AIDS Day, we rededicate ourselves to developing a national AIDS strategy that will establish the priorities necessary to combat this devastating epidemic at home, and to renewing our leadership role and commitments abroad. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend Signature Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Open House in Northern Virginia. Musicals and theatre are definitely off the beaten path for me, but I always enjoy it when I do go. One of the open house events showcased an actress/singer who sang and spoke about a play she [...]

If you can’t confidently answer no, your health is in risk. We’ve discussed the ravages of HIV/AIDS in the African American community, especially in Black women. But for some reason a lot of us keep our heads in the sand. Yes, it’s incredibly scary. But knowledge kills fear. June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. You [...]

According to the Sunday’s Washington Post, you’re more likely to get HIV than win the lottery if you live in Washington, DC. In an article on the front page, and above the fold, the Washington Post reports on the severe epidemic of HIV/AIDS in the nation’s capitol, yes the same place where President Obama lives:
At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a “generalized and severe” epidemic, according to a report scheduled to be released.

The Washington Post: Can we talk frankly about HIV/AIDS and black women? No? I didn’t think so. After all, who cares to tell sassy little Keisha that if she doesn’t stop mistaking sex for love, her next mistake could be her last. Of course, that wouldn’t be “age appropriate,” now, would it? What about the [...]
