Did you know that there are African American winemakers (vintners) and they even have their own organization? Now, as much as I enjoy a nice bottle glass of vino you would think I would be aware of such an illustrious organization. The Root keeps me in the know with a great slide show that highlights African American vintners:
The Wine Institute says that 90 percent of American wine comes from California’s nearly 2,900 wineries and 4,600 grape wine growers. The Association of African American Vintners (AAAV) has seven members, and there are several other black winemakers, also covered in this photo slide show, who aren’t members. Black-owned restaurants, and wine bars that carry the award-winning vintages, include 1300 on Fillmore in San Francisco, Chicago’s Bin 36, Pican in Oakland, Calif., and Nectar Bar and Therapy Wine Bar in New York City.
Some featured African American vintners to look out for:
- Black Coyote
- Poston Crest Vineyards
- Running Tigers Wines
- Sharp Cellars
- Stover Oaks Winery
- Theopolis Vineyards
- Vision Cellars
