Shouldn’t We Be Able To Fire Bad Teachers?

Most people will answer, “of course” but it’s not that easy. Teachers belong to unions that prevent bad teachers from getting fired.

Parents and students in Chicago Public Schools are dealing with this conundrum at the moment. And the Chicago Tribune editorializes on the issue:

Bad teachers aren’t so hard to identify. Students know who they are. Parents know who they are. Teachers, perhaps better than anybody, know who they are.

There’s nothing more aggravating in any workplace than the knowledge that a poorly performing employee gets to keep drawing a paycheck.

In the case of a school — in the case of your child — that’s tragic.

So what gives? Shouldn’t we be able to fire bad teachers?

I agree that we should be able to fire bad teachers. But, given the union issues, that's not going to happen. In the meantime, I hope that there can be some agreement to give rewards or incentives to the better performing teachers.
