June 8 Primaries – Biggest Primary Day of the Year

The New York Times has a great guide on what to watch as primary returns come in this evening.

Of all the incumbents on the ballot across the nation Tuesday, of all the establishment figures whose careers are on the line in this midterm election year, there is no bigger target than Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader.

But will Mr. Reid’s prospects rise after Tuesday night?

That’s one of the questions that will be answered when the outcome of primary contests in 11 states — the biggest day so far this election season — provides a layer of clarity as to how Republicans and Democrats will be positioned in their battle for control of Congress over the next five months.

It’s a coast-to-coast series of primaries, with voters from South Carolina to California choosing which candidates will be on the general election ballot in November in campaigns for governor, House and Senate. Here is a state-by-state guidebook for some of the important races to watch.

There are primaries and runoffs in the following states:

  • Arkansas Runoff
  • California Primary
  • Georgia House CD 9 Special Election Runoff
  • Iowa Primary
  • Maine Primary
  • Montana Primary
  • Nevada Primary
  • New Jersey Primary
  • North Dakota Primary
  • South Carolina Primary
  • South Dakota Primary
  • Virginia Primary

Putting aside my Democratic sensibilities and speaking solely as someone interested in politics, I have to say the thing that has struck me about this primary season is first and foremost how many primary voters have real, substantive, ideological decisions to make. Usually primaries are like the North Carolina Senate race, where I'm being asked to choose between two candidates that will likely not act much differently once elected. It's refreshing.

Second, there are also differences between candidates as far as electability. Voters, especially Republicans, are faced with several opportunities to choose between a more ideological candidate and a more electable one. So, what do you do? I've always been partial to the more ideological candidate, but that could be why I don't have a job in politics any more.

I'll be cohosting a live blog/chat during the results this evening at

Regardless of ideology, all feedback is welcome
