Violence and our Youth: The questions that come to mind after reading these news stories are:
Where are their parents?
Why aren’t they in jail?
And, how inept can city government get?
Colbert King opines in the Washington Post on the recent killings in Southeast Washington, DC and the failure of DC government:
One of the homicide victims, and two of those arrested in connection with that violence and an earlier shooting, were under the commitment of the city’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.
The Post reported on Thursday that the 14-year-old youth charged with first-degree murder in Tuesday’s mass shooting was under DYRS commitment and had run away before his arrest. He had nine prior convictions and had been in DYRS custody six times.
What’s more, one of the four homicide victims in Tuesday’s shooting, an 18-year-old man, was also under commitment to DYRS.
Orlando Carter, 20, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Tuesday’s shooting. His brother, Sanquan Carter, 19, was also under DYRS commitment at the time of his March 22 arrest for the alleged murder of Jordan Howe, 20. Howe’s death and Tuesday’s drive-by reportedly are connected.
The Associated Press reports on the HORRIFIC case of a 15-year old selling her 7-year old sister for sex:
Police say the 15-year-old girl went to a party with some men at Rowan Towers on March 28 and the younger girl tagged along because she was worried about her stepsister’s safety. They say the 15-year-old sold sex to men and boys there, then took money to let them touch the younger girl. They say the touching turned to forcible sex as at least seven men raped the 7-year-old.
Additional arrests are expected, police said.
Before Saturday’s arrest announcement, the 15-year-old had been charged with promoting prostitution, aggravated sexual assault and other crimes. Police have not released her name, and she remained in juvenile detention Saturday night.
Someone say a prayer. And then get angry!
