Contributor Spotlight: Kimberly
We are fortunate to have regular contributors such as Kimberly who periodically graces us with her wisdom and wit. As we wish Kimberly a Happy Birthday, we also wanted to showcase Kimberly’s contributions to blackgirlgrown:
Why Precious is Important (Movie Review): Although there is nothing about this movie with which I can personally identify, in the end I was happy that I saw it as it does serve as a reminder that one can overcome adversity with the love and support of mankind, and that we all have a responsibility to help the least of those among us. The acting in this movie is superb. Gabby Sidibe IS Precious. I cannot imagine that anyone else would do this character justice. Mo’Nique earned her bona fides — she is now more than a comedienne, and Mariah Carey certainly made up for the disaster that was Glitter. I predict Oscar nominations in the acting categories for Sibide and Mo’Nique, and another for adapted screenplay. I would be stunned with anything less.
You May Only Be A Year Old But You’re All Grown Up: I remember that day in the not-so-distant past when blackgirlgrown’s creator announced that she was going to launch this website. If memory serves me correctly we were at a mutual friend’s house sitting on the deck and, no doubt, drinking wine when the idea of blackgirlgrown was floated. Suffice it to say we were supportive of our friend and encouraged her to go for it. Fast forward to that time when we were once again at the home of our mutual friend and blackgirlgrown’s creator was loaded down with a laptop and several “how-to” books. She pretty much sat in a corner talking out loud, but to no one in particular, about this-that-and-the-other thing as it related to building a website. This is when I realized she was serious about blackgirlgrown.
What Do Lobbyists Actually Do?: Wikipedia defines a lobbyist as a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest, which can be a corporation, organization, an individual or the general public. I agree with the definition; however, I prefer to say that a lobbyist seeks to educate and advocate rather than tries to influence. Some may say there is no difference but I personally believe there is a huge difference.
Thanks Kimberly and Happy Birthday!!
