I was pleasantly surprised to see Chef G. Garvin as a Circle of Promise Ambassador for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Komen’s Circle of Promise is geared toward raising awareness about breast cancer to the African American community.
In an email to Circle of Promise readers, Chef G. Garvin encourages us to eat well:
These days, everyone is a multitasker; we juggle work, family, school, relationships, church, and somewhere in between we find time to eat and maybe exercise. Ah, but sometimes we don’t make wise food choices that promote healthy living. Well, I’m here to share some tips on how to support a healthy lifestyle.
First, we must get active. Physical activity should be part of our daily routine. Not only does it burn energy (calories), but can also help lower the risk of some types of cancer and other diseases. I’m hitting the gym pretty hard daily in my quest to stay fit. I encourage you to do some type of activity. Learn more about Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s fitness events.
Secondly, we have to control our weight. Did you know that a weight gain of 20 pounds or more after the age of 18 may increase the risk of breast cancer? I know it’s difficult to turn down those fried chicken dinners at church and Momma’s peach cobbler, but we should learn how to incorporate those occasional “treats” into an already healthy lifestyle consisting of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
