Our 2010 Happiness Project for January focused on getting more energy. For me, that meant getting more quality sleep and more exercise.
More Quality Sleep: Grade B+
Those who know me know well my great affinity for restful slumber. I am likely to choose sleep over almost anything. But that didn’t necessarily translate into quality sleep. For January, I made a conscious effort to go to sleep at a decent time. More importantly, I resisted the urge to read my RSS feeds when I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t fall back asleep.
Was I successful? Hmm, I did much better than I thought. Going to bed at a decent hour wasn’t that difficult because I’m usually dog tired. But staying asleep was a challenge. I forced myself – and my Blackberry – to stay in “sleep mode.” That was easier said than done, and resulted in a few restless nights staring at the ceiling. But I do feel that I was able to fall asleep faster than if I would powered on my Blackberry.
More Exercise: Grade C
You would think that vanity and the quickly approaching swim suit season is reason enough to get me in the gym (or at least down two flights of stairs to my elliptical machine). Not so much. And it makes absolutely NO sense because I feel GREAT after working out, not just physically but mentally as well.
In January, I was able to check off a couple of dates on the calendar, but not as many as I would like. What I have (re)learned is that 1) I must work out in the morning, after work is not an option, and 2) my hair will be just fine (or at least decent enough to not get weird stares in the office).
How did January work out for you?
Stay tuned for February’s Happiness Project theme!
