Sites We Like: Avoice Online Virtual Library Project
What: The Avoice (African American Voices in Congress) web site is designed to capture and preserve the rich history of political and legislative contributions of blacks for future generations. This virtual online library is a central source of information about historical and contemporary African American policy issues important to researchers, academics, educators and students.
Why: Those of us who do not understand our history are destined to repeat it. Before President Obama could fathom an America that would elect an African American as President, scores of African Americans toiled in the civil rights movement and the halls of Congress. Avoice gives voice, and creates a virtual archive, to African American voices in Congress from the 19th Century to those currently serving. Simply, Avoice captures the history of the participation and contribution of African Americans in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
