My first trip to the grocery store this year brought me smack into a new law in the District of Columbia. Shoppers must now pay five cents per plastic grocery bag. That’s just the beginning of new laws on the books.
Our elected officials in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico enacted some 40,697 laws, many of which took effect January 1st.
No Texting Here: This year, New Hampshire, Oregon and Illinois make a total of 19 states, the District of Columbia and Guam in banning text messaging for all drivers.
No flavor in California: California restaurants are now banned from using “oil, shortening, or margarine containing specified trans fats.”
No Smoking in Tobacco Country: A statewide smoking ban in bars and restaurants took effect in North Carolina, the nation’s biggest producer of tobacco.
Same Sex Marriages: No problem now in New Hampshire. New Hampshire joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa in legalizing same-sex marriages.
Don’t Speed Too Fast in Georgia: The State of Georgia has a new “super speeder” law which applies an additional $200 charge for those busted driving “well above” the speed limit – drivers over 85 mph on four-lane roads and interstate highways, or 75 mph on two-lane roads.
