Whether you love your J-O-B or not, you owe it to yourself to be the best at it until something better comes along (which may take even longer in this economy!). And who knows, becoming better at it may make you enjoy your job better. Some tips and techniques to get better at the game.
- Beating the Boys Club: Marie Claire magazine (amazing magazine that is amazingly underrated) has a great post on how to beat the boys club. Their advice includes: don’t ever cry (tell that to Aunt Flo!), brace yourself for some hazing, and feel free to channel your inner b*tch!
- Take The Credit You Deserve: ForbesWoman reminds us not to be a shrinking violet when credit is deserved. We sure as hell don’t get spared the blame (hmm…). ForbesWoman recommends writing weekly reports to the boss to make sure he/she knows what you’re working on (and what ideas YOU came up with), being visible (you’ve heard it before…if a tree falls in the woods …), keeping an e-mail trail (also helps in covering your assets), and several other ways to get your deserved credit.
- Have Better Meetings: We all know the makings of bad meetings. The convener isn’t prepared, half the time is spent on non-essential business, and there is never an outlined goal, resolution, or outcome. Don’t be that person. Black Enterprise advises you do your homework (research the client, the issue, the people), come prepared and with the goal in mind.
Good luck. Keep at it. Failure is not an option.
