Wow! I can’t believe it’s been a year since the launch of blackgirlgrown.
What began as a personal search for information, community, and problem-solving has turned into a public platform for the same.
In the last 12 months,
- I’ve met some phenomenal women online and in person – all focused on improving themselves and the world around them.
- I’ve kept to a commitment to post every week despite the challenges of having a full time career, family commitments, and life in general – all while making sure that I am experiencing life to the fullest. This is a big deal for me.
- I’ve become more comfortable in telling my own story, and using the word “I.” As much as blackgirlgrown is a part of me I tried to maintain some distance as not to bore readers with my own personal and mundane challenges. But I learned that my challenges, to some degree, are your challenges.
Together, we’ve,
- Followed the historic first year of Barack Obama’s presidency and kept up on the policy debates on Capitol Hill
- Learned the game of football along with football analogies used in the workplace
- Raised awareness about diseases that disproportionally affect black women such as breast cancer, lupus, and HIV/AIDS
- Figured out how to use LinkedIn, what texting lingo means, and how to manage and protect your online reputation
- Learned about the international world around us and the plight of others within the African diaspora
So what’s next?
Well, in 2010 we will continue on the path of self-improvement in the traditional areas of career, family, personal finance, health and wellness, community, political engagement, and technology. And living green no matter how personally challenging it is for me!
New features will include:
- Our 2010 Happiness Project (more information later this week)
- Expanding and showcasing what’s good on the net by featuring “Sites We Like.”
- Opportunities for readers to interact with each other and share their stories on blackgirlgrown
- New contributors that broaden the diversity of what it is to be a black girl grown
So I hope you will continue to follow us on the journey ahead. We hope you will grow with us, give us guidance on where we need to grow to keep you clicking, and become a part of the blackgirlgrown community.
Thank you for your support over the last year. Whether it’s becoming a part of our 1800+ Facebook community, retweeting our posts, telling just one friend about blackgirlgrown, buying a T-shirt, or commenting on posts, you are the reason why we’ve grown!
With great admiration, humility, and appreciation,
