Be More Productive

Heather Huhman of Washington wakes up just after 4:00 a.m. and hits the gym. Before Ms. Huhman walks into her office at a national health-care association, she writes a column for local news site Examiner.com. It’s something the 27-year-old does to help build her platform as a career expert — a necessity for the success of the company she has founded on the side, Come Recommended (comerecommended.com), a site where people can solicit professional references. And it’s this fledgling business that gets a majority of her attention outside business hours.
Sound familiar? I’d swear Alexandra Levit was talking about me (minus the husband, kids, and the 4 am workout – but I’m working on it!).
My mind never seems to be in a restful state. I’m guilty of “to-do-dreaming,” the act of pretending to listen in a meeting or a conversation when you’re really organizing your multiple to-do lists in your mind until you find a way to tap it into your Blackberry.
Yes, everyone is doing more with less. But you can never get more time.
So how can one be more productive without waking up at 4 am?
Wall Street Journal columnist Alexandra Levit writes about Heather and other professionals juggling more responsibilities than time along with her tactics to stay ahead:
Some productivity tactics have been around since the dawn of work. Some of my favorites: Clear off your desk and computer desktop so you don’t become overwhelmed by too many tasks claiming your attention at once; and don’t put a team meeting on the calendar without a specific agenda that will result in a concrete strategy.
