Superwoman Needs a Break

b. danielle encourages us to put away our capes on That Black Girl Site:

On any given evening I’m running around the house cooking dinner, doing laundry, writing, checking emails and tweets, catching up on my favorite shows, and trying to keep my three-year-old from tearing up the house. Like many women, and moms, I struggle to keep up with all the things that I have to do without driving myself nuts. Finding the happy medium–between feeling accomplished because my to-do list is remarkably shorter and feeling at ease because I’m not running around like a chicken with my head cut off—can be difficult, but it’s definitely necessary.

It’s been over thirty years since Michelle Wallace’s groundbreaking book, “Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman”, explored the unattainable myth black women have long since tried to uphold. For years, we have simultaneously held down households, raised babies, supported our men, worked full time, and educated ourselves all because we had to. Many of us seem to easily balance it all, but often it comes at the expense of our personal life. Trying to be superwoman has left many of use tired, frustrated (and let’s not forget angry), and our relationships hanging by a thread.

So what’s a woman to do?

b. danielle goes on to provide some helpful advice.
