blackfemaleaccomplishedAre you frustrated about the way African American professional women are portrayed? If you leave it up to the mainstream media, we are all angry, unmarried, and demanding.

Here is an opportunity to define who we are as professional black women. Sophia A. Nelson, political commentator and blogger, is writing her first non-fiction book, Black. Female. Accomplished., delving into the historical and modern day perceptions of black professional women. Slated for release in Summer 2010, Sophia is asking us, as African American women, to participate in an online survey.

No worries. The survey and your answers are confidential. It is also purposely invasive. As Sophia notes:

This survey is purposely invasive if you will so we can get to some rarely talked about facts. It may be uncomfortable for some of you, but please go with your honest, gut, first responses to all questions and read carefully. Don’t select answers to be politically correct. These questions cover health, relationships, workplace, family, sexuality, perceptions about black women, spirituality. We need candor.

The survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete, and you’ll be surprised what you learn about yourself.

Access the survey here.
Learn more about Black. Female. Accomplished.

We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section after completing the survey.

I am not a woman, so while I peaked at the survey to sate my curiosity, I did not complete it. I am, however, a scientist by academic training which leads me to wonder how the data collection methods Ms. Nelson is attempting to employ will skew the scientific validity of that data. Self-selecting, and self-identifying respondents are antithetical to objective conclusions and analysis.

Restaurant refugee–if you are what you represent than you well know that in the past 5 years with the advent of the internet and technology very reputable pollsters use online polling data routinely. For a demographic such as professional black women we have to find the demographic the best way we can–for such a very personal survey the respondents must trust the data–a phone poll of 500 professional black women would cost about $30,000 and the publisher would not give us a budget that we needed to do $50,000 worth of the gold standard research you reference. Moreoever, we would have a hell of a time getting the target demographic we need–the pollsters I am using (did you actually read that thepollingcompany/womantrend and Dr. Silas Lee drafted the polls and are conducting the analysis) came up with this methodology to meet our unique need. So get over it and stay off my survey. It is unorthodox and unprofessional.
