What Ever Happened to the AIDS Quilt?

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend Signature Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Open House in Northern Virginia. Musicals and theatre are definitely off the beaten path for me, but I always enjoy it when I do go. One of the open house events showcased an actress/singer who sang and spoke about a play she performed that portrayed the AIDS quilt stories of loved ones lost in musical theatre format.

Until that moment I hadn’t thought about the AIDS quilt. While in high school, I actually served as an AIDS Quilt usher when portions of the AIDS Quilt visited our area. It was the early 90s and I recall it being a solemn experience. Much was still unknown about the disease, and it still was perceived as a disease of gays and transfusion patients.

Now, more than 15 years later, the disease ravages black women without mercy.   Where is our AIDS quilt? Who is telling our story with solemnity?
