Things That Are Evil

Chalk it up to my love of Family Feud as a child, but instead of signature David Letterman “Top 10″ lists or Jeopardy’s answers in the form of of a question, my mind categorizes lists in the tradition of Family Feud. Thus today’s post on things that are evil.

Credit Card Companies: I was one of the last remaining holdouts that the credit card companies had some type of objective way of deciding whose credit limits to cut or cards to cancel. Apparently not. Obviously those stupid individuals who pay more than the minimum each month and a history of always doing so are on the ax list. Never mind Pookie (no job, no credit check, no down payment necessary) down the street has a different credit card for each day of the week and takes bill payment notices as mere suggestions. It doesn’t make any damn sense! Perhaps stupid of me to think that it should.

Those Last 10 Pounds: If it is anything women are experts in, its losing and gaining weight. There is nothing better than getting into the zone, a routine or working out, eating better, and seeing the pounds drop little by little. You start trying on clothes you couldn’t fit before and notice your slacks have relaxed from their former “high-water” length status. Until of course, you hit the brick wall known as plateauing. No matter your adherence to the routine that got you this far, nothing seems to move the needle. Weight-loss purgatory. Those last 10 pounds are a stubborn and mocking reminder that you’re not there yet and you’re gonna have to switch it up if you plan on making your goal.

Facebook: Facebook has always been that peculiar tech application. More mature than MySpace, but less transactional than LinkedIn. Its supposed to be the fun locale for the fun, savvy professional. Sure they raid your address books, pimp out your friends list, and give you some “smoke and mirrors” confidence that your privacy is protected. And thousands of unsuspecting netizens upload racy videos and photos, co-sign racist rants, and divulge more themselves than they’ve shared with their pastor. Now, Facebook wants to pimp out your personal photos to advertisers. Of course, Facebook insists this isn’t the case.

Political Party Generated Talking Points: I am a card-carrying political junkie. I’m a fan of the Sunday talk shows, love MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and try my best to have an appreciation of both sides of an issue. That is until politicians and pundits become lazy and use the latest set of talking points given to them instead of doing the work and research themselves. Whether it’s climate change or health care reform, I could recite verbatim the Democratic and Republican talking points. Unfortunately, the voting public loses out and they too end up reciting the same staid talking points. Tough issues, like climate change and health care reform, are not black or white, red or blue, right or wrong, or left or right. Be a revolutionary. Develop your own opinion.
