Saturday’s Race for the Cure (Washington, DC)

grftc1

The Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure is Saturday, June 6, 2009 in Washington, DC.

Late registration is available June 2nd – June 5th at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Regrettably, breast cancer is the most common cancer among African-American women and the second leading cause of cancer death among African-American women, exceeded only by lung cancer. In 2007 an estimated 19,010 new cases of breast cancer and 5,830 deaths are expected to occur among African-American women.

Although breast cancer incidence is lower among African Americans, African-American women have a 36 percent higher breast cancer death rate than Caucasian women.

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area has one of the highest breast cancer incidence and mortality rates in the country. Funds raised from last year’s Race for the Cure provided a combined $3.7 million in community grants to more than eighteen groups in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Every dollar counts given the average cost of treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, is $50,000.   My goal is to help women before they even need to contemplate the cost of such treatment.

  • $100 will help a woman without health insurance receive a mammogram that could save her life
  • $250 will pay for 5 clinical breast exams

Make an impact.  Sign up for the Global Race for the Cure.

Late registration is available June 2nd – June 5th at the U.S. Department of Commerce.
