June is Home Safety Month

There is nothing more necessary than to feel safe in your own home.  But it is also important to protect your home against interior as well as exterior threats.  Since the break-in I’ve reinforced the perimeter and added some other safety solutions. But safety inside the home is also important.  There is no point being safe in your home if you’ve got toxins and flammable solutions marinating under the sink just waiting to combust.

Every June, the Home Safety Council promotes Home Safety Month, an initiative that focuses on heightening awareness to help the public become better informed and better equipped to prevent injuries in the home. According to research some 20 million medical visits were required for treatment of home injuries last year. The Home Safety Council encourages the public to take some simple steps to minimize their risk from potential injuries, or even death, from the leading causes of unintentional home injuries: fires/burns, slips/falls and poisonings.

I’ll admit I’m not one to really think about home safety until after the fact.  Like after I’ve had the contractors tear up the basement tile and then wondering if there could be asbestos. Not a good strategy.

The Home Safety Council has limitless resources, and even has a nifty personal home safety checklist you can fill out and get tips specific to your living arrangements.

Electrical safety within the home is very important and should be payed close attention to. Making sure that your home is equipped with the proper safety features and devices can be life changing. A new product, a fire-prevention outlet, is something that should be installed in every home! What this product is able to do is detect abnormal heat within the electrical circuit and wiring, and once this heat has been detected by the outlets multiple sensors, the power to the circuit is cut off. Once this occurs, a potential fire has been stopped and in turn saves your home, property, and lives.
