There is a fine line on what to share with coworkers. Don’t share enough, you’re perceived as stand-offish, or not a team player. Share too much, and it could be used against you at some point. Perhaps not the most optimistic advice for the workplace. But rather learn from those who have been “once bitten, and twice shy” before making the same mistakes.

The Washington Post highlights the history of the civil rights movement in Alabama. One of the iconic moments of the civil rights struggle was the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The television coverage of white cops beating down non-violent and peaceful black demonstrators attempting to exercise their voting rights was seared into the nation’s consciousness.

I’ve never been a fan of Seal’s. I enjoyed his music if I heard it on the radio, but never felt compelled to buy his album. Until now. Last year, Seal came out with an album covering soul classics. Several months later, the album is still in heavy rotation. Seal covers the following classics: A [...]

I’ve been hesitant to post anything about the Chris Brown/Rihanna incident because I do firmly believe in getting ahold of the facts before making sweeping statements and generalizations. So a week ago while watching the Grammy’s I gave the incident the benefit of the doubt. And part of me just didn’t want to believe it. [...]

It is not a time when you’re thinking about getting the “best deal.” However, whether we admit it or not, finances play a major role in determining the type of care we are able to provide. Smart Money outlines 5 ways to cut costs without feeling like you’re sacrificing the care of your parents.

DeWayne Wickham: The NAACP Mustn’t Lose Its Way

DeWayne Wickham writes: The NAACP turned 100 this month. The centennial anniversary of the civil rights organization’s birth has produced a rash of news stories that give short shrift to its contributions to this nation, and provide scant understanding of its roller-coaster ride through history. The telling of both needs to be improved upon to put the NAACP’s first 100 years into proper context. History was important to its founders, who purposefully declared its creation on Feb. 12, 1909 — the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth.

I’ve always been a fan of the New York Times Proof blog which gives varying perspectives on alcohol and American life. I look forward to showcasing its contributors here on blackgirlgrown. Paul Clarke explains the “why” and “how” he drinks, and ultimately how this will shape his children’s experimentation. He curiously distinguishes between the true [...]
